Need a quick, last minute pumpkin activity? Try out these Jack-O-Lanterns, which are a seasonal version of my Feelings Faces. They are great for helping young learners express emotions.
I suggest printing them onto cardstock and then taping them to wooden sticks. Or you could laminate them, add velcro, and use them on your flannel board.
For this song, I point to a Jack-O-Lantern, and ask “How does this pumpkin feel?” or “Do you think this pumpkin is happy?…scared?….etc.” Then we sing the corresponding verse.
Tune: If You’re Happy and You Know It
If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands.
If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands.
If you’re happy and you know it, then you’ll really want to show it.
If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands.(Continue with additional verses)
If you’re angry and you know it, stomp your feet….
If you’re silly and you know it, wiggle around….
If you’re sad and you know it, rub your eyes (“boo hoo”)….
If you’re surprised and you know it, say “Oh my!”…..
It’s Pumpkin Day Mouse! by Laura Numeroff
This is the perfect toddler book to accompany this activity and extend the “faces and feelings” conversation. In the story, Mouse paints happy, silly, sad, and surprised faces on his pumpkins.
Great minds! I just put together a flannel board this afternoon with the exact same pumpkin faces! I plan to use this simple song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8b4f5fhYuw – though my kids already know & like ‘If you’re happy’ … may have to re-think that! Anyway, your pumpkins are adorable. Happy hallowe’en!
