Candy Science

We recently started a new program at our library for homeschool families. It’s a monthly program that invites children of all ages to come and explore different topics such as science, art, literature, etc. This month we did science experiments using candy! It was a blast! This would be a fun program for summer too 🙂 We also borrowed iPads from our community technology center which was very fun for the kids – I’ll let you know which apps were their favorites!

Experiment 1: Floating “M”

  • M&M’s
  • Clear cup or bowl
  • Water (room temperature)

Fill cup/bowl with room temperature water. Put M&M’s face up at the bottom so you can see the”M”. Watch as the colors being to dissolve and the hard outer shell becomes translucent. The “M” will magically begin to float up! I did this one first because it takes about 15 minutes for the “M” to float to the surface. As we did other experiments we kept an eye on our M&M’s.

Experiment 2: Gobstopper Color Mixing

  • Gobstoppers
  • Shallow Dish (styrofoam plate or petri dish)

Fill plate with water until bottom is covered. Drop gobstoppers of different colors on the edge of dish- make sure they are equal distance apart. Watch as the colors dissolve in the water but don’t mix!

 Experiment 3: Sink or Float Candy Bars

  • Mini Candy Bars- I chose Kit-Kat, Twix, 3 Musketeers, & Butterfinger
  • Clear Bowl
  • Water

First, we made our predictions on which would sink and which would float. The Kit-Kat and 3 Musketeers floated while the Twix and Butterfinger sank. The kids loved doing this! Be sure to have extra candy to eat afterwards 🙂

Experiment 4: Pop Rocks Balloon

  • 1-2 Packets of Pop Rocks
  • 12-16 oz. Bottle of Soda
  • Balloon
  • Funnel

This didn’t turn out quite as good as I had hoped but the kids still enjoyed it! I couldn’t find actual Pop Rocks and had to use a smaller, different brand, which I think made the difference. First, pour the contents of Pop Rocks into the balloon using the funnel. Place the balloon over the lip of soda bottle and pour in Pop Rocks. Watch as the balloon inflates and expands!
