Worms & Gardens

The second week of SRP is themed around soil & dirt! The soil conservation came to our library with a Soil Tunnel Trailer that showed what it looks like underground! We learned about composting, gardening, root vegetables, and worms. Storytime this week was all about wiggly worms and beautiful gardens!

SRP PROGRAM: PRESCHOOL

OPENING SONG: Shakin’ Everywhere by Jim Gill
from the album Irrational Anthem & More Salutes to Nonsense

BOOK 1: My Garden by Kevin Henkes
This is an all time favorite book of mine – I LOVE the illustrations!

BOOK 2: Muncha, Muncha, Muncha by Candace Fleming
The group really liked this book and thought it was hysterical that the bunnies kept eating the veggies!

BOOK 3: Worms for Lunch? by Leonid Gore
Great read-aloud book!

FLANNEL SONG/STORY: Herman the Worm
I was struggling to find a fun worm song when I stumbled upon this idea.  After watching this Herman the Worm video from Picture Book Crafts I thought it would make for a great flannel! Although I didn’t have time to make the pieces out of flannel, they still turned out pretty cute even if they were just laminated! I put the lyrics below but watching the video will help you get the tune. I also changed a few words around to go along with the animal I chose.

I was sittin’ on my front porch chewin’ my bubble gum.
(smack, smack, smack-make noises with mouth)

Playing with my Yo-Yo
(up down, up down-do motions with hand)
When along came Herman the worm and he was this big!
(measure with hands)
And I said, “Herman what happened?”

He said “I ate an ant!”

Continue on with each animal : chicken, cow, and elephant (Herman gets bigger and bigger.)  Until the last verse…..

The next day, I was sittin’ on my front porch chewin’ my bubble gum
(smack, smack, smack-make noises with mouth)
Playing with my Yo-Yo
(up down, up down-do motions with hand)
When along came Herman the worm and he was this big!
(measure with hands)
And I said, “Herman what happened?”
(Herman is little again)

He said “OOPS! Excuse me! I burped!”

The kids will LOVE this part! 🙂

SONG: The Littlest Worm by Nino from the album The Best Things in Life

GAME: Wiggle Worms
This game will definitely get all the wiggles out! Cut strips of paper and put them into a paper bag. (It doesn’t matter how many- I cut about 10). Draw worms on half the strips, and hearts on the others.

  • Sit the group in a circle on the floor
  • Take turns passing the bag around and pulling worms (strips of paper)
  • If you pull out a “wiggle worm” then everyone stands up and wiggles.
  • If you pull out a “heart” then everyone gives a friend a hug or a group hug.

SNACK: Dirt & Worm Donut Holes
Since we learned all about worms, I decided to make some dirt & worm donuts! Just lightly frost donut holes with chocolate icing and dip in brown sprinkles. Top with a mini gum worm and enjoy!

See you next week 🙂
