Easter Bunnies

TODDLER PROGRAM

OPENING SONG: The More We Get Together

OPENING RHYMES:

BOOK 1: The Easter Bunny’s Assistant by Jan Thomas

A hilarious book about Skunk, who is trying to help the Easter Bunny dye eggs for Easter.  But every time Skunk gets excited about Easter he…..well…..emits a rather unpleasant odor.  Eeww!  Kids and parents both got plenty of giggles out of this one!  This book is made to be read aloud.

FINGERPLAY: Two Easter Baskets

Two Easter baskets under a tree
One for you (hold up right fist)
And one for me (hold up left fist)

I peeked in one basket (pretend to peek in basket)
And what did I see? (point to eyes)
A new baby chick smiling at me! (pop thumb out of fist)

Then I looked in the other (peek in other basket)
And what do you think?
Out popped a bunny (pop bunny fingers out of fist)
Quick as a wink!

ACTION SONG: See the Easter Bunny
Tune: Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush

See how the bunny hops along, hops along, hops along. (crouch and hop)
See how the bunny hops along,
On an Easter morning.

This is the way he wiggles his nose, wiggles his nose, wiggles his nose. (wiggle nose)
This is the way he wiggles his nose,
On an Easter morning.

This is the way he flops his ears.  (flop hands above head like ears) …..etc.

This is the way he shakes his tail. (shake bottoms) …….etc.

FLANNEL RHYME: Hippty-Hop, Hippity-Hay

Hippity-hop, hippity-hay (clap to words)
Five little bunnies went out to play.
Hippity-hop, hippity-hay (clap to words)
One little bunny hopped away…..

Hippity-hop, hippity-hay
No little bunnies went out to play.
They’re all getting ready for Easter day!
Hippity hippity hop, HAY HAY!

The words for this rhyme are from Loons and Quines @ Librarytime (originally from a book of the same title by Opal Dunn.)  I did change the words in the last stanza to make it Easter-themed.

Bunny Flannel Instructions:   The template for the flannel bunnies is from the Purl Bee.  The template is to make hand-sewn bunny finger puppets, but we made them into flat flannel bunnies held together with glue.    Here’s how:

  1. Cut five bunnies out of white or cream felt, using the Purl Bee’s template.  Since these will be flat, instead of 3-dimensional, you will want to add another ear.  I also rounded off the bottom corners
  2. Choose five pieces felt in spring colors.  Cut one bunny from each color, about 1/4 inch larger than the original template.
  3. Cut five small circles from pink felt for the noses, and small pink shapes for the inside of the ears.
  4. Make five pom-pom tails, using white or cream yarn and following the instructions from the Purl Bee.
  5. Glue each white bunny onto a colored bunny.
  6. Glue on the pink inside-ear pieces and the pom-pom tails.
  7. Draw on black eyes using a permanent marker.
  8. We pulled apart pieces of string to make the thin whiskers.
  9. Glue the whiskers on, and then glue the nose on top of the ends to hold them in place.
  10. Attach Velcro to the backs of the bunnies; their tails make them too heavy to stay on a flannel board themselves.

BOOK 2:  Chester’s Colorful Easter Eggs by Theresa Smythe

Chester chooses the colors of the rainbow to dye his Easter eggs.  Once they are finished, he gives them out to his friends.  A cute book about friendship that is also helpful for practicing colors.  We photocopied the eggs from the pages of the book and cut them out to make the accompanying flannel board.  As I read each page, I placed the corresponding egg on the flannel to make a rainbow at the end.

If you’re hoppy and you know it, hop around
If you’re hoppy and you know it, hop around
If you’re hoppy and you know it
And you really want to show it
If you’re hoppy and you know it, hop around.

…hop around
…shake your tail
…stomp your feet
…wiggle your nose

SNACK:  Easter egg cupcakes
The recipe for these yummy, moist coconut cupcakes comes from SkinnyTaste.com.    You just use a white box cake mix, and replace the eggs and oil with applesauce and coconut milk.  It made me feel like giving children cupcakes at 10:30 in the morning wasn’t so bad if they have applesauce in them…..that’s almost healthy! Right?  🙂

For the icing I used 2 cups confectioner’s sugar, 3 tablespoons butter, and 2-3 tablespoons boiling water (Beat all ingredients until fluffy.)  After the cupcakes were iced, I dipped them in shredded coconut and topped them with speckled jelly beans.

    • Thank YOU for posting the hippity-hop rhyme! I was excited that it’s not just another “five little bunnies…” rhyme. We loved using it in storytime!
