TODDLER PROGRAM
ARGHHH! Ahoy Mates! This week was Pirate storytime! I had so much fun with this and the group did as well 🙂 Don’t be afraid to dress the part!
OPENING SONG: The More We Get Together
OPENING RHYMES:
BOOK 1: Peg Leg Peke by Brie Spangler
Pirate Ship
Sail, sail, sail your ship
Gently over the sea
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
A pirate’s life for me.

The One-Eyed Pirate
The one-eyed pirate (cover one eye)
He’s fierce, and he’s tough (clench fists & scowl)
He digs for buried treasure (digging motion)
But it’s never enough. (shake head)
He lives on a ship (hold up flat hand, thumb out)
Way out on the sea. (rock hand in curvy motion, other hand under it)
His parrot is his only friend, perch hand on shoulder)
Except for me. (point to self)

Ten Little Pirates
Ten little pirates stood in a row, (Hold up 10 fingers.)
They bowed to their heads to the captain so! (Lower and raise fingers.)
They marched to the left; (March hands to left.)
They marched to the right. (March hands to right.)
They shouted yo ho! (Cup hand by mouth.)
And gave their captain a fright. (Hands over heart.)

ACTION SONG: Pirate Song by Andy Z
from the album Welcome to Andyland
This is a great song that involves counting! Easy to make up actions to as well 🙂
FLANNEL ACTIVITY: This Old Pirate
This old pirate, has a hat
Where a skull and crossbones sat.
With an Ar, Ar, Ar, and an Ay Matey!
This old pirate sailed the sea.
Additonal Verses:
This old pirate has a hook, uses it to hold a book.
This old pirate has a map, keeps it handy in his lap
This old pirate has a bird, barely knows a single word.
This old pirate has a ship, travels the world in a single trip.
This old pirate looking for treasure, more than anyone could measure!

BOOK 2: Bubble Bath Pirates by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
You could even blow real bubbles after reading this book 🙂
CLOSING RHYME: Tickle the Clouds
CLOSING SONG: Skinnamarink
CRAFT: Pirate Hats
These are simple and fun — kids always love something they can wear! I found the pirate hat template from clker.com. I added yarn to brass fasteners to secure the hat so the children could take them on and off easily.

Looks like a great storytime! I’m going to have to use that “One-Eyed Pirate” fingerplay next time I do a pirate theme.
