OPENING SONG: If You’re Happy and You Know It
OPENING RHYMES:
BOOK 1: Let’s Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy by Jan Thomas
Can you tell we love Jan Thomas’s books? 🙂 The children do too!
FINGERPLAY: Ten Little Cowboys
Ten little cowboys standing in a row ( hold up 10 fingers)
When they see the pretty cowgirl,
They bow just so ( bend fingers down)
They ride to the left (hands move left)
And they ride to the right (move hands to right)
And then they shut their eyes (close eyes & hands)
And sleep all night. (put cheek on hands)

ACTION SONG: I’m a Little Cowboy
I’m a little cowboy.
Here is my hat.
Here are my boots,
And here are my chaps.
When I get up,
I work all day,
Get on my horse
And ride away!

FLANNEL STORY/SONG: She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain
For my flannel this week I chose to do the song She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain. I printed out pictures that went along with the chorus and put them on the flannel board as we sang them. It gave the children something to look at while singing along with the music. We did a few actions to the song as well to get the kids moving! I found the pictures for the flannel through clkr clipart and print a project-making friends.

BOOK 2: Are You a Horse? by Andy Rash
This was a fun and interactive book that the whole group enjoyed! Cowboy Andy doesn’t know what a horse is so he asks each animal he finds if they are a horse. The kids had fun with this because they could shout out what animal it was.
ClOSING RHYME: Tickle the Clouds
CLOSING SONG: Skinnamarink
CRAFT: Cactus Cowboy
This was a very simple and easy craft that turned out to be a big hit! I found a cactus and mouth from clkr clipart and then used the hat and bandana from print a project-making friends. For the eyes, I used stickers we had from a previous craft. I had everything cut out beforehand so all the children had to do was stick on the pieces using a glue stick. Lastly, I set out popsicle sticks so the children could tape those on the back to make their ‘cactus cowboys’ turn into puppets.
– Mollie
I just did a cowboy story time too and couldn’t find a 3rd great cowboy book, so I just used Jan Thomas’s “Can you make a Scary Face?” I’m trying not to force reading a book just to fit a theme. Thanks for the additional title of Can you Ride a Horse?
