Dance

TODDLER PROGRAM

We had an action-packed storytime this week filled with silliness and giggles….oh yeah, and dancing!  I loved both books that we read and all of the songs.  I don’t know about the kids, but I was definitely ready for a nap afterwards

OPENING SONG: The More We Get Together

OPENING RHYMES:

BOOK 1: Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae

Poor Gerald the giraffe can’t dance with his knobby knees and skinny legs. All of the other animals make fun of him, until Gerald finally learns that everyone can dance – they just have to find the right tune.

MARCHING SONG: We’re Marching ‘Round the Room
We held hands to form a circle and then we attempted to march around in a circle.  It’s always a challenge to get everyone moving in the same direction at this age.  Maybe next time I wouldn’t do this in an organized fashion, and just let everyone march wherever they please!

Tune: The Farmer in the Dell
We’re marching ’round the room
We’re marching ’round the room
High ho the derry-o
We’re marching ’round the room

Additional verses: We’re tiptoeing, jumping, and dancing ’round the room.

ACTION SONG with Shaker Eggs: Walk Around
from Dino O’Dell’s album Itty Bitty Monsters

I think this is a new favorite!  The actions are included in the words of the song (I love when I don’t have make the actions up myself!)

BOOK 2: Baby Danced the Polka by Karen Beaumont

Baby is supposed to be napping, but instead he’s dancing the polka with a polka-dotted pig! (and other farm friends.)  A silly book with colorful lift-the-flap pictures.

ACTION SONG: The Fruit Salad Song
I came across this song on Future Librarian Superhero and it sounded too fun to pass up.  Check out Miss Anna’s blog for a description of this song and hand motions.

Tune: Frere Jacques
Watermelon
Papaya
Banana
Fruit Salad!
(Repeat, getting faster each time.)

ACTION SONG with Scarves: Silly Dance Contest
from Jim Gill Sings the Sneezing Song and Other Contagious Tunes

I passed out colorful activity scarves to everyone and we danced.  All of the instructions are given in the song.  This was probably the biggest hit of the day.

CLOSING SONG: Now It’s Time to Say Goodbye to All Our Friends

CRAFT: Dancing Scarves

These are very simple to make: Cut pieces of crepe paper and glue them to a Popsicle stick….then have fun dancing!
