TODDLER STORYTIME
Toddler Storytime Classes are back for the fall! We started out with a Stop and Go theme that focuses on self regulation. Research is finding that self regulation is critical for school success in preschool, kindergarten, and throughout elementary school. This storytime contains music and movement activities to help children practice these skills, and teaches them to stop, think, and then act.
OPENING SONG: The More We Get Together
OPENING RHYMES:
BOOK 1: Red Light, Green Light by Anastasia Suen
ACTION RHYME/GAME: Green Says “Go”
Show a traffic light and explain that red means “stop,” yellow mean “slow,” and green means “go.” I use green, yellow, and red pieces of paper to hold up for visual aids while doing this action rhyme. Then you can extend this rhyme out into a game using the pieces of paper – hold up the different colors and have children march quickly, slowly and freeze at the appropriate times.
Green says, “Go!” march quickly
Go! Go! Go!
Yellow says, “Slow!” march slowly
Slow…slow…slow
And red says, “Stop!” stop and freeze
Go! Go! Go! march fast
Slow…slow…slow march slowly
and STOP! stop
Repeat

BOOK 2: Stop and Go, Maisy! by Lucy Cousins
SONG ON CD: “Self Control” by David Kisor
MP3 download
This is an excellent song for teaching children self regulation. Children move and dance as fast as they can until the “Stop!”
ACTION RHYME: I’m a Little Pick Up Truck
Tune: I’m a Little Teapot
I’m a little pickup truck
Shiny and yellow,
When I go out driving Pretend to drive.
I’m a very happy fellow.
When the rain comes down Flutter fingers downward
I turn my wipers on Move arms back and forth
I splash through puddles,
All around the town.
When I see a red light (Hold up red sheet of paper)
I stop on a dime Stop pretending to drive
When I see a green light (Hold up green sheet of paper)
I know it’s driving time Resume driving
Vroom! Vroom! Beep! Beep!

FLANNEL STORY/BOOK 3: Chickie: Stop and Go by Norman Gorbaty
Chickie: Stop and Go is a board book that is too small to read to a large group, so I made it into a flannel board story. I scanned each page of the book and enlarged the pictures (which surprisingly didn’t make the pictures fuzzy at all!). I then wrote the simple text on the back of each flannel board piece and voilà…a perfect storytime flannel board.
CLOSING SONG: We Wave Goodbye Like This
CRAFT: Traffic Light Necklace
What a great, simple craft from Sarah at Awesome Storytime via Storytime Katie! To make it even easier, I created a printable template for you.

I don’t have the pics saved because I photocopied them from the book, but I’d be happy to send over the words. The animals are pretty easy to find clipart of. I often use http://www.clker.com to find free clipart, and I’m sure that they have the animals that you’ll need!

Me too! I am doing a Stop and Go storytime next week at my library, and the Chickie Stop and Go book sounds adorable. Of course, nobody in my library system has it. Could you e-mail me the text also? Thanks and God Bless!
