Hooray for Halloween!  Dressing up in Halloween costumes for storytime is so much fun!  I was so busy having fun that I forgot to get pictures of all of us in our costumes

Emotion Version with Pumpkins
In place of the usual “Emotion Faces” that I use for this song, I used Pumpkin Emotion Faces!

If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands…
If you’re sad and you know it rub your eyes (boohoo!)….
If you’re surprised and you know it say “oh my!”….
If you’re angry and you know it stomp your feet….
If you love Halloween and you know it clap your hands….

FINGERPLAY: Two Little Ghosts
Practice saying “Boo!” several times before starting this rhyme.  Then practice the line tippytoe, tippytoe, tippytoe….Boo!

A very old witch was stirring a pot (make stirring motion)
Ooooo-0000! Ooooo-oooo!
Two little ghosts said, “What has she got?” (shrug shoulders)
Tippytoe, tippytoe, tippytoe……. (walk fingers up arm)
Boo! (Clap)

BOOK 2: Pop-up and Play: Spooky Shadows by Richard Fowler
I wasn’t sure how this was going to go over in storytime, since I would have to turn the lights out for this book to work.  I asked everyone beforehand if they would be OK turning the lights out for a few minutes to read this book.  I promised that if anyone got scared, I would turn the lights right back on.  No one cried (hooray!) and this book was a HIT!  It’s a pop-up book, but not your typical pop-up book.  Pop-up and Play: Spooky Shadows comes with a small LED flashlight, and when you shine the flashlight on the pop-up it makes cool shadows.  We looked at shadows of ghosts, sharks, pumpkins and other spooky, Halloween shapes.

CRAFT: Foam Haunted Houses
We made these out of precut foam shapes.  The shapes were peel-and-stick so no glue was even involved.  Sometimes simple is so nice!

Boo! It’s Halloween!

TODDLER STORYTIME

Today we had tons of Halloween fun at storytime!  Some storytime friends even came in costume – we had kitty cats, a crayola crayon, a feirce bull fighter, and even a dinosaur.  The kids had lots of giggles trying to scare their parents/cargivers by saying “Boo!”

BOOK 1: Mouse’s First Halloween by Lauren Thompson

FINGERPLAY: The Itsy Bitsy Spider, The Great Big Spider, and the Teeny Weeny Spider
A variation on the Itsy Bitsy Spider:  Sing this song three times, using a “great big scary spider voice” and a “teeny weeny spider voice” on those verses.
The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout.
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain,
And the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again.

The great big spider went up the water spout . . .
The teeny, weeny spider went up the water spout. . .

FINGERPLAY: Two Little Ghosts
Before doing this rhyme, it’s important to practice saying “BOO!” so that the children will know when to expect it and will not be scared.  “Turn to your parent/caregiver and say Boo! to them.”  Then practice the line tippytoe, tippytoe, tippytoe….Boo!

FLANNEL STORY: Mouse’s Halloween House
Template and story from: Mother Goose’s Playhouse by Judy Sierra
In this story, little mice nibble windows and doors in their big orange house until it becomes a Jack-o-lantern.

SONG/CD: Five Green Goblins (from Fisher Price Halloween Sing-a-long CD, Listen to the song here)
This is the Halloween version of ’5 little monkeys jumping on the bed.’  A great one to get the wiggles out – It will inspire lots of jumping!

I saw a ghost (fingers circle eyes)
He saw me too (point to yourself)
I waved at him (wave your hand)
But he said “BOO!” (try to scare person next to you)

CLOSING SONG: We Wave Goodbye Like This

SNACK: For a sweet treat, I made up some Oreo cookie spiders. Here are some fun kid-friendly instructions. For these treats you will need:

  • Oreos (preferably the ones with orange filling)
  • Icing (tinted orange)
  • Pretzel sticks
  • M&Ms


HALLOWEEN CARDS: I made these cute little bat cards to hand out.  All you need is black paper, lollipops and a silver or white paint pen!  Template and instructions from: Better Homes and Gardens, Halloween Fun: 101 Ideas to Get in the Spirit.

Pumpkin Time

I was unable to be with all of my storytime friends this week, so Ms. Kim led this Pumpkin Storytime.  There are just too many fun things to do for Halloween, so I decided to stretch things out a bit by making this week’s theme Pumpkins and next week’s theme Halloween.  Isn’t fall wonderful?

OPENING SONG: The More We Get Together

FINERPLAY: Once there was a pumpkin
Once there was a pumpkin (Make circle with hands)
And it grew, and it grew, and it grew (With each “grew” make circle bigger)
Now it’s a jack-o-lantern smiling at you! (With a smile, point to children)

CRAFT: Pour red and yellow paint into ziplock bags and let children mix them until they are orange.  Parents can help draw jack-o-lantern faces on them with permanent markers.
