TODDLER PROGRAM

I had a full house today!  Seeing so many happy faces is always a wonderful way to start a morning. :

BOOK 1: I Want to be an Astronaut by Byron Barton
I have to admit that I personally didn’t love this book, but it has simple text and bold pictures (and I couldn’t find anything better)….so I read it for storytime.  And the kids thought it was great!  They were intrigued by the space suits, and space shuttles, and floating while sleeping.  I’d definitely include it in storytime again.


WIGGLER: Pretend to be a rocket ship

Have everyone crouch down on the ground and put their hands (palms together) over their heads and pretend to be a rocket ship.  Here come the engines….rumble rumble (wiggle wiggle).  We’re getting ready to take off.  Let’s count down. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF! (jump high in the air)  Repeat.

FLANNEL SONG: If You’re Going to the Moon, Wear Your Boots
Tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It.”

If you’re going to the moon, wear your boots (stomp stomp)

I love, love, love this flannel board and song!  I’ve been singing it all morning.  The flannel board inspiration came from Loons and Quines @ Librarytime and the pattern came from Alljoinin.  I printed out the earth and space ship, and laminated them.  But I really liked the flannel one-eyed aliens from Loons and Quines, so I made them out of flannel too.  I was going to just sing this, but after finding the version from Juice Music, I had to use it.  We all stood up, practiced looking LEFT and looking RIGHT, and danced to this one with some simple hand motions.

BOOK 2: Higher, Higher by Leslie Patricelli
I had trouble finding good space books for toddlers, and just happened to come across this gem.  A little girl keeps asking her dad to push her “higher, higher!” on the swings.  She goes past a giraffe, tall buildings, an airplane, all the way up into outerspace where she meets an alien also swinging.  There aren’t many words other than “higher, higher,” but it’s a great read aloud because  you can ask the children: “How high is she now?” “Do you think you could swing that high?” etc.


SONG: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Sometimes is nice to include an old favorite that everyone knows.  We sang this with simple hand motions.  If you need a refresh, here’s a short video to watch.

Twinkle, twinkle little star (open and close hands to make ‘twinkling stars’ with fingers)

Up above the world so high (circle arms over head)
Like a diamond in the sky (make a diamond shape with fingers)

CLOSING SONG: Now It’s Time to Say Goodbye to All Our Friends

CRAFT: Outer Space Coloring Sheets
This was a good reminder that sometimes simple is best.  I didn’t have a craft prepared for this week, so I did a google search and found some space themed coloring sheets (rocket, astronaut, alien, winnie the pooh astronaut, etc.)  I was worried that they would miss the craft, but the kids were so happy to just color today!

TODDLER STORYTIME

I have been out of town for the past few weeks due to a family emergency and have not been at storytime.  :(   Luckily, Ms. Susan was kind enough to fill in, and I’m sure everyone had lots of fun with her!  I’m now trying to catch up and figured that I would post my agenda’s from the past couple of weeks.

OPENING SONG: Mister Sun

BOOK 1: City Animals by Simms Taback
This is  a very fun book that can be used as a guessing game.  Pages unfold into giant pictures of animals . . . and two of the animals included are a dog and a cat.  The entire book is  interactive and brightly colored.  A definite favorite.

The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

I made this flannel board out of black and white clip art, that I colored and laminated.


BOOK 2:
Some Dogs Do
by Jez Alborough
Can dogs fly?  This book lets us in on the secret that yes, some dogs really do.

SONGS: “Where oh where has my little dog gone” and “Do your ears hang low?”
Using a dog puppet to help sing these songs makes them even more fun – especially if you have one with long ears!

Where oh where has my little dog gone?
Oh where, oh where can he be?
With his ears cut short and his tail cut long,
Oh where, oh where can he be?

Bring out dog puppet and sing ‘do your ears hang low? Illustrated actions can be found in Play Rhymes by Marc Brown.

BOOK 3: Cleo’s Color Book by Caroline Mockford

CLOSING SONG: We Wave Goodbye Like This

CRAFT: Make a dog-ear headband.  Cut strips of paper to fit around child’s head.  Cut out two long dog ears and attached to paper headband.  Color, decorate and wear – then sing “Do your ears hang low?” again!

Fall seems like the perfect time for a storytime all about the moon.

BOOK 1: Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
One of my all-time favorite books!  The story follows “poor kitten” through a series of humorous mishaps as she goes in search of the moon, which she has mistaken for a bowl of milk.  Simple text and gorgeous black and white illustrations will make this 2005 Caldecott winner a favorite for years to come.

FLANNEL RHYME: Hey Diddle Diddle

Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,

FINGERPLAY: Sun and Moon
For moon: Hold hand to form crescent, For sun: spread five fingers for sun’s rays
Moon comes out (Hold hand to form a crescent.)
Sun goes in. (Place other hand behind back)
Here is a blanket to cuddle your chin. (Place hands under chin.)
Moon goes in. (Place moon hand behind back.)
And Sun comes out. (Hold hand out with fingers extended)
Throw off the blankets and bustle about! (Fling arms out wide and wiggle body.)

This is a sweet and simple song, but be forewarned – it’s one that tends to get stuck in your head!  I use motions to go along with the song.

A charming rhyme accompanied by Alison Jay’s unique folk-like illustrations.

And the great big shining moon (arms overhead in circle)
My mama tucks me into bed (fists under chin)
And sings this goodnight tune

CRAFT: Provide children with pre-cut yellow moons and foil stars to glue to sheets of black paper.  Use white and yellow crayons and glitter to decorate your night sky picture. (sorry, forgot to take a picture of this one!)
