Songs with Santa

1 Jan

I’m a little late in getting this posted, but here’s a quick summary of our ‘Songs with Santa’ family program.  It ended up being a very cold, rainy/icy night and I considered cancelling the program, but despite the weather about 25 people showed up.  First we sang Christmas carols, with “Here Comes Santa Claus” welcoming Santa into the room.  (I learned from last year that songs sheets with the words to the carols were a must!  Here’s our handout.)   Then everyone decorated sugar cookies with icing and sprinkles, while  children took turns sitting on Santa’s lap.  Santa had a gift for each child (a snowman notepad and a Christmas stamp), and there was plenty of opportunity for parents and caregivers to take pictures of their children with Santa.

Here’s my supply list for this program:

  • Song sheets with words to the carols
  • Santa’s gifts (from Oriental trading)
  • Red tablecloths
  • Christmas napkins and plates
  • Holiday sprinkles
  • Red and green icing
  • Sugar cookies
  • Plastic knives
  • and Santa Claus!

Singing songs with Santa Claus

Creating a yummy masterpiece.

Santa had a special gift for each child.

Merry Christmas!

BOOK 1: Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood

ACTION SONG: Rudolph! Rudolph! Turn Around
Put your hands on your head to make Rudolph’s antlers.  Now, keep them there during the whole rhyme!

Rudolph, Rudolph, turn around.
Rudolph, Rudolph, touch the ground,
Rudolph, Rudolph, touch your nose,
Rudolph, Rudolph, touch your toes;

Rudolph, Rudolph, jump up high.
Rudolph, Rudolph, touch the sky.
Rudolph, Rudolph, touch your knees,
Rudolph, Rudolph, sit down please!

FLANNEL RHYME: Rudolph, Rudolph, What Will You Do?

This flannel board and rhyme came from the Library Quine as part of the Flannel Friday Holiday Extravaganza! Get the awesome PDF templates to make Rudolph (as well as the complete words to the rhyme) at Loons and Quines @ Librarytime.  The kids enjoyed this one – especially yelling out the different colors of Rudolph’s nose.

Rudolph, Rudolph, what will you do?
You can’t guide Santa’s sleigh if your nose is BLUE

The rhyme continues through many different colors, until finally….

Rudolph, Rudolph, the children are in bed
And now we can get on our way because your nose is RED.

BOOK 2: If You Take a Mouse to the Movies by Laura Numeroff

COLOR GAME: Color Ornaments

Rhyme and PDF clipart file are from Mel’s Desk.  Hand out paper ornaments to the children, then have the children bring them up to you as you say this rhyme:

Way up high on the Christmas tree
A colorful ornament I did see
Shiny and round and pretty as could be
Bring all the red ornaments up to me

SONG: Jingle Bells
MP3: from the Fisher-Price Christmas Sing-Along album
I always love to use bell instruments while we sing jingle bells.  However, the night before storytime, I searched high and low, but I couldn’t find our bells anywhere.  I went home that night expecting to cut this song from the storytime line-up.  When I came in the next morning, there was a whole bag full of jingle bells sitting on my desk!  My amazing staff members had found small bells and strung them onto chenille sticks to use as jingle bell instrumentsIt was a little bit of Christmas magic.

CLOSING SONG: We Wish You a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

CRAFT: Christmas Ornaments
Everyone made a foam ornament to take home and hang on their tree!

BOOK 2: Dream Snow by Eric Carle

SONG: We Wish You A Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas;
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin;
Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.

CRAFT:  A simple wreath craft that can be used as an ornament, or can be hung on a door or wall for decoration.
Here is my printable wreath pattern/template.

I cut out two wreaths: one in light green and one in a darker green.  We used stickers to decorate our wreaths, but these also look nice decorated with cut-out holly leaves and berries (see photo below), buttons, ribbon, glitter, or any odds and ends that you may have lying around!
