Little Balloon
I had a little balloon (make a circle with hands)
That I hugged tight to me (hug self tight)
There was a great big BANG! (clap hands loudly)
No more balloon, you see.

But if I had this many more (hold up five fingers)
I wouldn’t hug them tight (shake head “no”)
I’d just hold onto the strings (grasp strings)
And fly them like a kite. (raise both arms high)

Pretty Balloons
(Tune “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)

Pretty balloons in the air,
Lots of colors we see there.
Red, and yellow, green and blue
Can you see the colors too?
Pretty balloons in the air,
Lots of colors we see there.

** For this I made pretend balloons that the children held up when their color was called!

Holiday Caroling Family Night

19 Dec

The last few years we have had caroling with Santa at the library.  This year we decided to change it up a bit and go out into the community!

Picture1

Everyone met at the library to pick up song sheets before we headed out to sing.

Click here to see our song sheet.

One of the wonderful things about being an in-town library is that we could walk to nearby houses.  We planned ahead, and let the families know that we were coming at a certain time.  This worked out well because it kept us moving at a quick pace…no time for anyone to lose interest!

002

One of houses we visited even prepared us hot spiced cider!  It was a nice treat to keep us warm out in the cold.

10081_10151319670498536_1370923459_n

After caroling, we headed back to the library to enjoy some homemade cookies and a do-it-yourself hot chocolate bar. (Prior to caroling, we made a large carafe of hot chocolate so that it would be ready to go when we got back.)

For the hot chocolate bar, we put out a carafe of hot chocolate & cups and spoons.  We also had a fun selection of toppings:

It was a fun night for all!  Happy Holidays!

Glitter Glass Ornaments

13 Dec

ARTS & CRAFTS

I made these glitter  ornaments for an adult arts & crafts program, but they are so simple and “no-fail” that I think they would be a really fun project to do with school-age children.  And the best part is that the glitter is INSIDE the ornament!  Once they are finished there is no mess!  Hooray!

S

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

1. Clear ornaments.  I used glass, but I think plastic would work too.  I purchased mine at Michael’s with a 40% off coupon.

2. Glitter.  The cheap craft stuff that comes in the huge jars is just fine.  I actually liked it better than the crazy-expensive glitter that comes in an itty-bitty jar.

And the super secret ingredient…..

3. Pledge floor wax.  Yes you read that correctly.  This stuff is cheap and comes in a huge bottle at Walmart.  You could make hundreds of ornaments using just one bottle.  Craft stores sell expensive ornament glue.  Don’t buy it.  Pledge works just as well!

4. Optional: Rubbing alcohol, ribbon for hanging the ornaments, scrapbook stickers & glass glitter paint for decorating the outsides of the ornaments.

S

DIRECTIONS

1. Rinse the inside of your ornaments with alcohol to clean out any dust and debris.  Let then dry out for a few minutes.

2. Pour some Pledge floor wax into your ornament and swirl it around.  Make sure you coat the whole inside of the ornament.

S

3. Dump out the extra Pledge. (It’s good to have a bowl to dump your pledge and glitter in as you go.)

S

3. Pour a healthy amount of glitter into your ornament.  Having a funnel makes it much easier.  If you don’t have a funnel, roll up a piece of paper and use it.

S

4. Swirl your glitter around the inside of the ornament, coating the entire inside.  Add more glitter if needed.  And if you don’t want to swirl – Shake!

S

S

5. Dump out any extra glitter.

S

6. You are finished!  Admire your work of art :)

S

DECORATING

Add pretty ribbon to hang your ornaments.

Purchasing scrapbooking stickers is a very easy and mess free way to decorate the outside of the ornaments.  I found some snowflakes that I really liked to use on mine.  If you choose stickers, children will be able to carry their ornaments home with them that day – no need to let them dry!

If you want to get a little bit more involved, you can purchase glass paint to decorate the outside of the ornaments.  I bought some Martha Stewart glitter glass paint (This paint was most expensive part of the project!)  To make polka dots, dip the eraser of a pencil in the paint and dot away.

Martha also makes glitter glass paint with a tip that you can write with.  You can write individuals names, the year, “first christmas,” etc. on the ornaments to make them personal.  (I made ornaments for all of my co-workers this year with their names on them.)

S

My last name is so long, it almost didn’t fit! :)

We had our stickers from a previous shopping trip but they can also be found here on Amazon.com.

TODDLER PROGRAM

OPENING SONG: If You’re Happy and You Know It

OPENING RHYMES:

BOOK 1: Tip Tip Dig Dig by Emma Garcia
Great book that shows all kinds of construction trucks! Uses repetition when describing what each truck does (dig dig, push push, etc.)

FINGERPLAY: Where are Trucks? (Thumpkin)
Where is pick-up truck?
Where is pick-up truck?
Here I am. Here I am.
How are you today, sir? Very well, I thank you.
Drive away. Drive away.
(Tow truck, dump truck, moving truck, firetruck)

*I wanted to use little toy cars/trucks but couldn’t find any so made these stick trucks last minute! I did it once with the kids using our fingers so that they would know what to do and then I brought out these for the next few times.

Credit: Storytime Katie

ACTION SONG: The Wheels on the Truck
The wheels on the truck go round and round (roll hands)

Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All through the town

Repeat with…
The shovel on the truck goes dig dig dig
The bucket on the truck goes dump dump dump
The horn on the truck goes honk honk honk

*Asking the kids what else trucks do made for great interaction and some funny answers!

Credit: Perry Public Library

FLANNEL ACTIVITY: Dump Trucks
Dump trucks, dump trucks,
Cleaning up the town.
Do you see any garbage lying around?
Pick up the trash and match it to a truck,
Soon the whole town will be all cleaned up!

* I ripped up scrap pieces of colored construction paper (yellow, purple, orange) and passed them out to the group. We sang the phrase 3 different times, each time referring to a new color dump truck. When their color “trash” matched the color truck they came up to throw it away! They loved doing this! Trucks available at clker.

This is a great, super easy, turkey craft that is different from all the rest! The group had a lot of fun decorating their turkey feathers and faces! Just a tip, if you are doing a younger group use the small paper plates and cut them in half – this worked easier because they didn’t have to glue on as many crepe paper feathers :)
