BOOK 1: Tip Tip Dig Dig by Emma Garcia
Great book that shows all kinds of construction trucks! Uses repetition when describing what each truck does (dig dig, push push, etc.)

FINGERPLAY: Where are Trucks? (Thumpkin)
Where is pick-up truck?
Where is pick-up truck?
Here I am. Here I am.
How are you today, sir? Very well, I thank you.
Drive away. Drive away.
(Tow truck, dump truck, moving truck, firetruck)

*I wanted to use little toy cars/trucks but couldn’t find any so made these stick trucks last minute! I did it once with the kids using our fingers so that they would know what to do and then I brought out these for the next few times.

Credit: Storytime Katie

ACTION SONG: The Wheels on the Truck
The wheels on the truck go round and round (roll hands)

Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All through the town

Repeat with…
The shovel on the truck goes dig dig dig
The bucket on the truck goes dump dump dump
The horn on the truck goes honk honk honk

*Asking the kids what else trucks do made for great interaction and some funny answers!

FLANNEL ACTIVITY: Dump Trucks
Dump trucks, dump trucks,
Cleaning up the town.
Do you see any garbage lying around?
Pick up the trash and match it to a truck,
Soon the whole town will be all cleaned up!

* I ripped up scrap pieces of colored construction paper (yellow, purple, orange) and passed them out to the group. We sang the phrase 3 different times, each time referring to a new color dump truck. When their color “trash” matched the color truck they came up to throw it away! They loved doing this! ACTION RHYME: Great Big Turkey

‘Cause I’m well fed.

Watch me bob my head.

When I strut around
I waddle, waddle, waddle.

And I’d love to stay.
But Thanksgiving’s coming.
So it’s time to run away!

This is a great, super easy, turkey craft that is different from all the rest! The group had a lot of fun decorating their turkey feathers and faces! Just a tip, if you are doing a younger group use the small paper plates and cut them in half – this worked easier because they didn’t have to glue on as many crepe paper feathers :)

FLANNEL STORY/SONG: She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain
For my flannel this week I chose to do the song  She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain. I printed out pictures that went along with the chorus and put them on the flannel board as we sang them. It gave the children something to look at while singing along with the music. We did a few actions to the song as well to get the kids moving! I found the pictures for the flannel through clkr clipart and print a project-making friends.

She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain
by Old Town School of Folk Music from album Song for Wiggleworms

BOOK 2: Are You a Horse? by Andy Rash
This was a fun and interactive book that the whole group enjoyed! Cowboy Andy doesn’t know what a horse is so he asks each animal he finds if they are a horse. The kids had fun with this because they could shout out what animal it was.

ClOSING RHYME: Tickle the Clouds

CLOSING SONG: Skinnamarink

CRAFT: Cactus Cowboy
This was a very simple and easy craft that turned out to be a big hit! I found a cactus and mouth from clkr clipart and then used the hat and bandana from print a project-making friends. For the eyes, I used stickers we had from a previous craft. I had everything cut out beforehand so all the children had to do was stick on the pieces using a glue stick.  Lastly, I set out popsicle sticks so the children could tape those on the back to make their ‘cactus cowboys’ turn into puppets.

OPENING SONG: If You’re Happy and You Know It

OPENING RHYMES:

BOOK 1: Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas

PROP: Yarn Dust Bunny
I found this little dust bunny prop on a storytime blog called Miss Alison is Blogging. It was just too cute I had to make one to go along with the book! Her blog gives you step-by-step instructions and pictures on how to make them!

FINGERPLAY: Two Little Dust Bunnies
Two little dust bunnies, underneath the bed
One named Ted, and one named Ned
(uh oh…here comes the vacuum!)
Run away Ted!  Run away Ned!
(Ok, it’s gone now, whew)
Come back Ted, Come back Ned.

(Repeat)

Credit: Our very own Leah created this funny fingerplay! :) She also made these to go along with it! The instructions above from Miss Allison is Blogging can be used to make miniature dust bunnies to go on fingers.

ACTION RHYME: Dust Bunny, Dust Bunny
Dust Bunny, Dust Bunny                                            Dust Bunny, Dust Bunny
Turn around                                                                  Jump up now!
Dust Bunny, Dust Bunny                                            Dust Bunny, Dust Bunny
Touch the ground                                                         Take a bow

Dust Bunny, Dust Bunny                                            Dust Bunny, Dust Bunny
Find your nose                                                              Arms up high
Dust Bunny, Dust Bunny                                            Dust Bunny, Dust Bunny
Dance on your toes!                                                     Wave good-bye!

FLANNEL ACTIVITY: Rhyming Dust Bunny Flashcards
Leah made these flashcards using Jan Thomas’s website. These make for a great flannel board activity that introduces rhyming words. Put up 2 cards (for toddlers make sure they are very easy words) and hold up another and ask the group which word it rhymes with. Repeat the words so they can see how they rhyme and sound the same.

BOOK 2: Llama Llama Mad at Mama by Anna Dewdney

ClOSING RHYME: Tickle the Clouds

CLOSING SONG: Skinnamarink

CRAFT: Llama Legs
I found this idea from the blog Brimful Curiosities.  Once you have found a llama picture to use, go ahead and cut out the llama without any legs and have the children color and decorate them. The clothespins work great as legs and the children love how they can stand on their own!

Great song to use with actions- crunch peanut butter, squish jelly, spread them together, eat it!

Peanut Butter & Jelly

FLANNEL ACTIVITY: Healthy vs. Unhealthy food
This activity went over pretty well with the children and was fun for parents too :) First, cut out and laminate pictures of healthy and unhealthy foods. Then make two categories for the food to go under such as “sometimes” and “always”. I would hold up the food and then ask the kids what it was and if we should eat it everyday or just sometimes for a treat! Some responses were very funny!

BOOK 2: The Very Hungry Caterpillar Pop-Up Book by Eric Carle

ClOSING RHYME: Tickle the Clouds

CLOSING SONG: Skinnamarink

CRAFT: This craft was inspired by a pinterest board! Make caterpillars with fingerprints – use kid-friendly ink pads and let the children use their imagination! Before hand I went ahead and cut out a small red circle for the caterpillars head so they had somewhere to start and go off of.
