Gnome and Fairy Storytime Ideas

1 May ????????

As we have been planning for summer reading, we’ve found that there is not much out there on gnomes and fairies to use for storytime.   So here are some ideas to get you started.  (The first three are short rhymes that I wrote.)

FINGERPLAY: Two Little Garden Gnomes
This is a variation on “Two Little Blackbirds”

Two little garden gnomes
Sitting on a leaf.
One named Kurt
And one named Keith.

Run away Kurt,
Run away Keith.
Come back Kurt.
Come back Keith!

FINGERPLAY: Two Little Fairies
This is a variation on “Two Little Blackbirds”

Two little fairies
Dancing on the lawn.
One named Faye,
And one named Fawn.

Fly away Faye.
Fly away Fawn.
Come back Faye,
Come back Fawn!

FLANNELBOARD RHYME: 5 Tiny Gnomes
Mollie and I made a flannel board to go with this rhyme I wrote – complete with templates!

Five tiny gnomes in little cloth suits,
Wearing funny hats and pointy boots.

When the sun has gone to sleep,
The gnomes come out to play hide-and-seek.

The first gnome ducked behind an old wooden door.
The second one nestled into grass growing on the forest floor.

The third one climbed a tall, tall tree.
The fourth one crawled in a log where no one could see.

The fifth gnome hid under a mushroom cap,
Where he decided to take a nap.

Five tiny gnomes in little cloth suits,
Wearing funny hats and pointy boots.

Once the sun rises up in the sky,
The gnomes head home and they all say “Goodbye.”

SONG AND MOVEMENT ACTIVITY:  Fairy Ring by Maria Sangiolo
from the album Fairy Moon-Songs of the Ring

Have children hold hands in a circle (or skip with scarves) and dance to this song.

SONG:  White Coral Bells by Laurie Berkner
from the album Victor Vito

Teach children the song “White Coral Bells.”  If the group is old enough, this is a perfect song to sing in a round.

White Coral Bells
Upon a slender stalk
Lilies of the valley deck my garden walk
Oh, don’t you wish that you could hear them ring?
That will happen only when the fairies sing.

FIND YOUR FAIRY NAME
And just for fun, here’s a fairy name generator!
It will provide both male and female names.  I found out that my fairy name is “Oak Starsprite – She grants wishes. She lives in forests of oak and ash trees. She can only be seen in the light of a shooting star. She wears pretty autumnal leaf colours and has handsome pink butterfly wings.”

BOOKS

The Little Gnome by Sheri Fink
This book is a little bit longer, but will be a nice read-aloud to use in storytime for preschoolers and up.  It’s about a garden gnome who has to learn to deal with change as the seasons progress.

The Mole Sisters and the Fairy Ring by Roslyn Schwartz
The actual size of this book is quite small – it’s not really big enough to read aloud in storytime.  However, the story is simple and cute!  Two mole sisters stumble across a fairy ring in the forest one day.  No fairies are in sight, but all the sisters need is a little fairy dust to turn themselves into fairies.  A story about pretend play and loving oneself.  Mollie is planning on turning it into a flannelboard.

themolesistersandthefairyring

We purchased these adorable little mole sisters finger puppets  available from Amazon, and then made them fairy outfits just like the mole sisters in the book.  We cut a leaf skirts out of green felt and used Velcro to attach them.  We also used artificial flowers for their hats!  (Note that they are not sold as a set on Amazon.  You have to order a quantity of two.)41VDFrJm1pL._SY300_ ????????

A Little Fairy Magic by Julie Huberry
Another good read-aloud with adorable, full-color illustrations.  This one has sparkling glitter on the pages that kids will love.

fairymagic

The Hidden Folk by Lisa Lunge-Larsen
While this is not your typical storytime book, it is worth picking up for all of its fun facts about gnomes, dwarves, elves and fairies.  Before each story is a page filled with “factual” information about each magical being; I think it would be fun to share some of these “facts” with a storytime crowd.  The stories themselves are geared toward an older group. (We are planning on sharing them with our 3rd-5th graders.)

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

18 Apr picnic

TODDLER PROGRAM

This week we had a special storytime! Everyone was invited to a Teddy Bear’s Picnic – including favorite bears and stuffed animals :) I was so excited to do this theme thinking it would be a beautiful Spring day, but I was very wrong! Flurries are blowing here in Kansas! Regardless of the cold weather we had an awesome indoor picnic :)

FLANNEL SONG: Going on a Picnic!
This idea came from Miss Courtney Meets Bobo. First, I asked the group what types of food they would like to bring to the picnic. After getting some interesting responses I brought out my flannel food pieces. We talked about which was our favorite and what color each one was. Then I played the song Going on a Picnic by Raffi and we sang (chanted) along!

Song: Going on a Picnic from the album The Corner Grocery Store by Raffi

Flannel Food Pieces: All found from clker
Apple, Melon, Lemonade, Cookie, Sandwich

BOOK 2: Bear Wants More by Karma Wilson
The group loved chanting “…but he wants MORE!”

CLOSING RHYME: Tickle the Clouds

CLOSING SONG: Skinnamarink

CRAFT: CD Bears
This is a fun craft to do if you have any old/recyclable C.D.’s that need to be used! Cut out the bear ears and nose and let the children draw on the mouth. I also passed out sticker eyes but googly eyes would work great too!

SNACKS: I thought it would be fun to have a little snack mix the children could eat since we are at a picnic!  I bought honeycomb cereal and goldfish because honey and fish are favorite bear foods :) I also snuck in a few gummy bears because those are my favorite! Strawberries and blueberries would also be a good treat!

Party Time!

28 Mar ????????

TODDLER PROGRAM

It’s so sad to say that this was my last storytime for our Spring session :( so of course we decided to throw a little party! This party themed storytime actually ended up being very fun despite my sadness! Parents and children brought in treats and snacks, we made party streamers, and did some dancing! I highly recommend doing this as a final storytime :)

OPENING SONG: The More We Get Together

OPENING RHYMES:

BOOK 1: Party Animals by Kathie Lee Gifford

ACTION RHYME: For this one I used the rhyme from the Birthday’s post. I asked the group what they liked to eat at party’s and course they all screamed… birthday cake! So before doing the birthday cake flannel rhyme we baked the cake!

Mix the batter, stir the batter (make a stirring motion with one arm/hand)
Shake some flour in (make a shaking motion with one arm/hand)
Mix the batter, stir the batter (make a stirring motion with one arm/hand)
Place it in a tin (pretend to pour)

Sprinkle in some chocolate chips (pretend to sprinkle)
Put it in to bake (open both hands, palms up, and slide them forward)
Then open wide the oven door (pretend to open door)

And out comes the cake! (open both hands, palms up, and slide them forward)

FLANNEL RHYME: Once we were done baking the cake, I put the candles on it and sang this rhyme with the group – be sure to blow all the candles out and don’t forget to make a wish!

**I found the Birthday Cake flannel from Storytime Katie

SUPERHERO OUTFIT: In order to prepare for this awesome superhero storytime, one must only dress the part! I had my cape, mask, and boots ready! Easter

21 Mar ???????????????????????????????

TODDLER PROGRAM

Miss Mollie is on vacation this week, so I got to fill in for her storytime this morning.  It made me miss doing regular storytimes so much!  We had lots of fun celebrating Easter.

OPENING SONG: The More We Get Together

OPENING RHYMES:

BOOK 1: The Easter Bunny’s Assistant by Jan Thomas

A hilarious book about Skunk, who is trying to help the Easter Bunny dye eggs for Easter.  But every time Skunk gets excited about Easter he…..well…..emits a rather unpleasant odor.  Eeww!  Kids and parents both got plenty of giggles out of this one!  This book is made to be read aloud.

FINGERPLAY: Two Easter Baskets

Two Easter baskets under a tree
One for you (hold up right fist)
And one for me (hold up left fist)

I peeked in one basket (pretend to peek in basket)
And what did I see? (point to eyes)
A new baby chick smiling at me! (pop thumb out of fist)

Then I looked in the other (peek in other basket)
And what do you think?
Out popped a bunny (pop bunny fingers out of fist)
Quick as a wink!

ACTION SONG: See the Easter Bunny
Tune: Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush

See how the bunny hops along, hops along, hops along. (crouch and hop)
See how the bunny hops along,
On an Easter morning.

This is the way he wiggles his nose, wiggles his nose, wiggles his nose. (wiggle nose)
This is the way he wiggles his nose,
On an Easter morning.

This is the way he flops his ears.  (flop hands above head like ears) …..etc.

This is the way he shakes his tail. (shake bottoms) …….etc.

FLANNEL RHYME: Hippty-Hop, Hippity-Hay

Hippity-hop, hippity-hay (clap to words)
Five little bunnies went out to play.
Hippity-hop, hippity-hay (clap to words)
One little bunny hopped away…..

Hippity-hop, hippity-hay
No little bunnies went out to play.
They’re all getting ready for Easter day!
Hippity hippity hop, HAY HAY!

The words for this rhyme are from Loons and Quines @ Librarytime (originally from a book of the same title by Opal Dunn.)  I did change the words in the last stanza to make it Easter-themed.

Bunny Flannel Instructions:   The template for the flannel bunnies is from the Purl Bee.  The template is to make hand-sewn bunny finger puppets, but we made them into flat flannel bunnies held together with glue.    Here’s how:

  1. Cut five bunnies out of white or cream felt, using the Purl Bee’s template.  Since these will be flat, instead of 3-dimensional, you will want to add another ear.  I also rounded off the bottom corners
  2. Choose five pieces felt in spring colors.  Cut one bunny from each color, about 1/4 inch larger than the original template.
  3. Cut five small circles from pink felt for the noses, and small pink shapes for the inside of the ears.
  4. Make five pom-pom tails, using white or cream yarn and following the instructions from the Purl Bee.
  5. Glue each white bunny onto a colored bunny.
  6. Glue on the pink inside-ear pieces and the pom-pom tails.
  7. Draw on black eyes using a permanent marker.
  8. We pulled apart pieces of string to make the thin whiskers.
  9. Glue the whiskers on, and then glue the nose on top of the ends to hold them in place.
  10. Attach Velcro to the backs of the bunnies; their tails make them too heavy to stay on a flannel board themselves.

BOOK 2:  Chester’s Colorful Easter Eggs by Theresa Smythe

Chester chooses the colors of the rainbow to dye his Easter eggs.  Once they are finished, he gives them out to his friends.  A cute book about friendship that is also helpful for practicing colors.  We photocopied the eggs from the pages of the book and cut them out to make the accompanying flannel board.  As I read each page, I placed the corresponding egg on the flannel to make a rainbow at the end.

If you’re hoppy and you know it, hop around

SNACK:  Easter egg cupcakes
The recipe for these yummy, moist coconut cupcakes comes from SkinnyTaste.com.    You just use a white box cake mix, and replace the eggs and oil with applesauce and coconut milk.  It made me feel like giving children cupcakes at 10:30 in the morning wasn’t so bad if they have applesauce in them…..that’s almost healthy! Right?  :)

For the icing I used 2 cups confectioner’s sugar, 3 tablespoons butter, and 2-3 tablespoons boiling water (Beat all ingredients until fluffy.)  After the cupcakes were iced, I dipped them in shredded coconut and topped them with speckled jelly beans.

Summer Reading – ‘Dig Into Reading’ Ideas

10 Feb Dig Into Slogan

Even though it still feels like winter…it’s already time to start preparing for Summer Reading!  Our library participates in the Collaborative Summer Reading Program, and this year’s theme is “Dig Into Reading.”

DIG-into-Reading Summer Reading Ideas

At first, I thought it was going to be all dirt and worms (which I actually like ☺) but there are so many different directions this can go!  Dinosaurs…buried treasure…gnomes & fairies…..I’m getting excited.2013kidsposter

Here are some storytime themes and ideas to get you started:

Ants & Bugs & Ladybugs

We have already picked up an ant farm to have out during the summer or to give away as a prize.  Did you know that you can also buy glow-in-the-dark ant farms & rainbow sand ant farms?  You can purchase the farms now, and then you order the ants through the mail when you are ready to set it up (but you have to wait until it warms up to order the ants….you don’t want them to freeze in the mail!)

37a551c88da0e147949be110.L._SX342_

Dinosaurs & More Dinosaurs

We have ordered these jumbo inflatable dinosaurs and these dinosaur dangling swirls.  The swirls will hang from the ceiling over the children’s check-out desk, and I’m not sure about the inflatable dinosaurs…but they were just too cool to pass up.  I seriously want this T-rex or this life-size standup poster, but they are a little pricey.

Gardening & More Gardening & Flowers

one mole

Mud and Dirt

A library near us has worm races each year (and they have a huge turnout!)  It was the first I had ever heard of it, but we are going to try having worms races this summer at the library.  Here’s a youtube video of worm races & here’s a youtube video about worm races from the Texas State Library.  Make sure to have prizes for the winners!

garden wigglers

Owls & More Owls

Did you know there is such a thing as a burrowing owl?  I didn’t until recently.  I couldn’t figure out why I kept seeing owls as related to the summer reading theme…I’m always learning something new!  You could include owls as part of a theme on “burrowing animals.”  And how cute is this burrowing owl puppet?

burrowing owl

Buried Treasure & Pirates

5199PjNukzL._SL500_AA300_

This is by far one of the coolest ideas I’ve seen for buried treasure – from Growing a Jeweled Rose.  These rocks are made from baking soda, food coloring and glitter.  Hide a treasure inside of each rock and then bury them in the dirt.  When kids find them, they spray them with vinegar and the rocks fizz and disappear, leaving the treasure!  I want to do this!  Seriously. Amazing.

Gnomes & Fairies

We have put together some great gnome and fairy storytime ideas for you, so make sure to check out our Gnome and Fairy Storytime Ideas Post!  We’ve even created a rhyme and gnome flannel board template.

I also think having one of these gnome doors in the library would be too cute.  And for a craft we’ll have the kids make fairy gardens or terrariums.
